Djerba, UNESCO World Heritage: The Island of a Thousand Treasures

Discover why UNESCO inscribed Djerba as a World Heritage Site in 2023 and explore 3,000 years of living history.

A Historic Recognition

In September 2023, UNESCO officially inscribed Djerba on the World Heritage List. This recognition celebrates not only the island's beauty but above all its unique testimony to an insular human settlement pattern shaped by millennia of Mediterranean exchanges.

For us at Jardins de Toumana, this inscription resonates particularly deeply: our architecture draws direct inspiration from this living heritage that UNESCO has chosen to protect.

3,000 Years of Mediterranean History

Djerba's history begins well before the common era. The Phoenicians established trading posts here as early as the 12th century BCE, already recognizing the island's strategic position at the crossroads of Mediterranean maritime routes.

After the Phoenicians came the Romans, who named the island "Meninx" and developed a purple dye industry renowned throughout the Empire. Vestiges from this era still dot the Djerbian landscape.

The arrival of Islam in the 7th century marked a turning point. Djerba became a refuge for the Ibadites, a distinct branch of Islam, who developed a unique culture blending spiritual rigor with tolerance toward other religious communities.

Houch Architecture: A Living Heritage

At the heart of the UNESCO recognition lies traditional Djerbian architecture, and notably the "houch" - the courtyard house that has defined the island's landscape for centuries.

The Djerbian houch is distinguished by:

  • Thick walls of stone and lime that keep cool in summer and warm in winter
  • A central courtyard (west ed-dar) that organizes family life around an open-air space
  • Characteristic vaults and domes that shape the village silhouettes
  • Regular lime whitewashing that gives the villages their immaculate glow

At Jardins de Toumana, our apartments perpetuate this architectural tradition. Each suite is designed according to houch principles: spaces opening onto verdant patios, natural materials, and that constant pursuit of harmony between interior and exterior that defines the Djerbian art of living.

Living Traditions: Pottery, Weaving, and Spirituality

Djerba is not a frozen museum - it's heritage that lives and is transmitted.

The Pottery of Guellala

The village of Guellala perpetuates a pottery craft two millennia old. Artisans there still shape local clay using ancestral techniques, producing the jars, amphorae, and everyday objects that made the island's reputation throughout the Maghreb.

The Weaving of Erriadh

In Erriadh, weavers keep alive the tradition of vertical loom weaving. Their creations - blankets, carpets, traditional garments - testify to an art passed down from mother to daughter for generations.

The El Ghriba Synagogue

A spiritual jewel of the island, the El Ghriba Synagogue is one of the oldest Jewish places of worship in the world. Each year, it hosts a millennia-old pilgrimage gathering faithful from around the world, a brilliant testament to the religious coexistence that has characterized Djerba for centuries.
